Why is an "Imperial Pint" 20 ounces, but when I use a measuring cup, it turns out to be 18 ounces?

An Imperial Pint is apparently 20 ounces, but I used a measuring cup and it only turned out to be 18 ounces from the cup. Also, I measured a US Pint, which is supposed to be 16 ounces, but it turned out to be 14 with the measuring cup. And if an Imperial Pint is truly 20 ounces, then why can I fill it up with 1 tall beer can, which is 16 ounces?

Why is an "Imperial Pint" 20 ounces, but when I use a measuring cup, it turns out to be 18 ounces?
Aside from the metric system, there are two other main systems of measurement in use today: the Imperial system of measurement and the USA system of measurement. The two systems are often confused with each other and sometimes one or the other terms are used to collectively refer to both systems (in particular, Europeans often use the term Imperial system to refer to either systems). However, despite similarities between the two, they are different systems. To properly explain their relationship, one needs to consider the history behind them.

Both the Imperial system and the USA system of measurement are based on the older English units of measurement. Prior to 1066 the English units included Anglo-Saxon measures (likely of ancient Germanic origin). After the Norman conquest (Battle of Hastings in 1066), the Normans re-introduced Roman measures, resulting in a system including ancient Anglo-Saxon measures and Roman measures. These units were standardised by the Magna Carta of 1215 and were periodically reviewed and updated (notably in 1496, 1588 and 1758). The UK Weights and Measures Act of 1824 was one such review, which not only modified the types and sizes of the units, but renamed them from the English units of measurement to the Imperial System of Measurement. This new standard was then introduced throughout the UK and its colonies at this time.

However, the USA had become independent prior to this and consequently did not adopt the Imperial system of measurement. Instead, they had developed their own measurement standards, based on the English units system which was used throughout the States prior to independence. As a result, the older English units developed into the USA system of measurement in the USA and into the Imperial system of measurement in the UK and countries colonised by the UK. What is imperial platinum with respect to jewelry?

I was looking at a ring setting and the website said that it was available in 18K white gold and imperial platinum, I have no idea what imperial platinum is.

What is imperial platinum with respect to jewelry?
As someone who sells jewelry, I believe that the title Imperial Platinum is used in a similar context to saying imperial jade, or royal ruby. In the past it was only the ruling classes that could afford these things.

Platinum is an extremely rare metal, being only 5ppb of the earths crust and as a result is around twice the price of gold also very difficult to work. All these factors make jewelry in this metal something that is rare, expensive and as a result desirable in society.

In the 18th century, the rarity of platinum made King Louis XV of France declare it to be the only metal fit for a king and it was used in manufacture of the Faberge eggs made for the Imperial Russian court and also other royal houses in their crown jewels.

Based on my knowledge and considered opinion, Imperial platinum is just a term to dress up its perceived value.

How big is the carbon foot print of a gallon of beer(permission allowed for imperial by E.U commissars)?

Is there to be a carbon tax on beer.As on fuel?

How big is the carbon foot print of a gallon of beer(permission allowed for imperial by E.U commissars)?
Now you have got me curious, did you get any sensible answers, in any category?
Reply:depends whether you drink it or spill it .lol
Reply:The carbon footprint of beer itself is minimal, and it is in the carbon cycle already - the grains and hops it is made of was carbon in the atmosphere. The more significant carbon footprint comes from the electricity used in producing it if it is a mass-produced beer, and the transportation and storage energy costs as well. Those would theoretically have their carbon impact built into their costs if a carbon tax was implemented, so the cost of the beer would reflect that indirectly.

If the Imperial Japanese Navy had capured Wake and Midway Island, could they have taken Hawaii?

During World War II, of course. They didn't capture Wake or Midway, but if they had, could they have taken Pearl harbour and the rest of Hawaii?

If the Imperial Japanese Navy had capured Wake and Midway Island, could they have taken Hawaii?
They did capture Wake, they did not Midway. I doubt they could have Pearl, even after the attack it was to heavily defended. If they had used their submarines right they could have pretty effectively blockaded it for awhile at least. The problem is they would have been well over extended and the IJN was never focused on Pearl or the American West Coast. The whole idea of the attack was to knock out our navy so they could run wild in the far east seizing resources and colonies they needed for their war effort. Even the Battle of Midway only happened because of the Doolittle raid on Tokyo and the objective was never the island. They wanted to draw our carriers into a fight on the disadvantage and destroy them. Well they might have had an even chance... But how? There were no transports or troops with the striking force. They had very poor amphibious capability throughout the war. Taking Wake was a major operation for them. All it was defended by was a handful of Marines and civilian contracters and a few Wildcat fighters. You can't starve out an island chain as lush as Hawaii. It was in range of heavy bombers from the West Coast. It would have been wonderful for us if they had tried. Even better if they succeeded. It would have let us dystroy a major part of their forces early. If they won we would have isloated it and all defenders like another Rabual in the South Pacific. It would have diverted so much of their military The Philipines might never have fallen and a lot more.....
Reply:What if Japan had attacked Wake and Midway on 7th December 1941, instead of Hawaii?

It's an interesting question. The American plans in the event of a war with Japan were to seek a battleship-led confrontation in mid-Pacific. If these plans had been followed, and eight battleships had been jumped by six carrier-loads of aircraft so that they were sunk several miles deep (of the eight battleships damaged at Pearl, six were back on active service within eighteen months) - well, what then?

It would almost certainly not have changed to outcome of the war - but it might've taken longer for the Allies to win.
Reply:I think it's possible. It would have been a pretty major fight, but they had shown the capacity for large scale warfare in China and the Philippenes Islands. Moreover, taking and holding Hawaii would have made the US task of building up to retake the Pacific a good deal more difficult. I would rate their chances of success at somewhat better than even, but only somewhat. Blockading Hawaii and using their Navy to take some of the outlying Islands while starving down the defenses would have been a likely tactic.
Reply:The Japanese defeated Russia in 1905. They controlled vast areas of China. They held Korea as a vassal state for 400 years. Yep, they could have taken Hawaii. Dorie Miller was the only sailor aboard a ship who had enuf sense to gun down Japanese Zeroes overhead, and he was a brother assigned to the mess. The Navy was filled with racist swagger and no brain just like McCain.
Reply:Eventually, yes. They could of taken Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor just because the troops stationed there were so thrown off from the attack. If Hawaii fell, the West Coast would have been completely open to invasion and the Pacific War could have had an entirely different outcome.

Should the UK accept responsibility for its Imperial past by granting Citizenship to the old Empire?

Should the UK automatically grant citizenship to any applicant from a former colony?

Should the UK accept responsibility for its Imperial past by granting Citizenship to the old Empire?
Only if they were born during the time when the country was still a British colony. Other than that I don't see why they should. Those countries wanted their independance, they got it so they should get all the priveldges and disadvantages that come with it.

BTW the USA used to be a British colony. *grins* Do you think the UK should give every American British citizenship as well?
Reply:yes ! India is poor because Britain is rich. A fact that most Britons know but don't like to acknowledge or even believe. Exploiting India for over 300 years, UK evolved into the world's richest Nations. The least they can do is share the riches wit the very people who made them rich.

Britain taught Indians English, and now they are pissed off about their jobs being outsourced to India. The day isn't far
Reply:No, the empire is long gone! The law is that even a child born on British soil (within the UK)does not automatically get British citizenship, unless certain requirements are met. So, why should people who have never stepped foot on British soil have the right and protection of a British passport ?
Reply:One of the great mysteries when it comes to the complaining of immigrants i see. As we all know Britain when it had the empire changed these countries to be like Britain. the way some used to say the people of India became more British than the British themselves. so my point is does saying they have different ideas than they have seem to have forgotten that fact. that Britain changed them countries to be more like Britain than the parts of the area that were not taken over. as for granting citizenship to all from the old empire that would seem a real nightmare to lots of people. considering Britain had such a huge empire it would be a headache to organize really. but do not worry they will call on the aid of the former imperial nations if they were under threat from attack as they done in the past.
Reply:It will be granting citizenship to half the world.

It is not feasible for such a small country.
Reply:NO!
Reply:were you planning to surrender? they outnumber you by a huge margin and are (mostly) poor.

I can see it now -- India temporarily solves its population problem in 2015 by encouraging 100 million of its citizens to move to Britain. Hindi becomes the official language in 2018.
Reply:That would be fine as long as it works both ways. British citizens allowed automatic citizenship to the former colonies
Reply:Erm, no.
Reply:This is not as straightforward as it might appear. Ethically, I feel Britain owes a huge debt to many people in the former colonies - Anzacs, Canadians, etc. and I think people from such places should be allowed to become citizens if they so wish. I find it excrutiatingly embarrassing when the UK makes it so difficult for our traditional allies to enter and work here, but it seems that people from places that have no such ties (and don't even like us) are welcomed in and afforded all sorts of privileges. Unfortunately, the UK consists of a small group of islands, which have a growing population, which in the future will be unsustainable. We no longer have an industrial base and business here consists largely of taking in each others washing. I also think we have made a huge mistake in joining the EU, certainly on the current terms of our membership. Most people in the EU don't seem to like us and personally, I think we would have done better to have remained loyal to our Commonwealth friends and traded more with them. Whether we like it or not, the UK is no longer independent, but has become a poor relation in the United States of Europe. Well, that's my opinion, for what it's worth.
Reply:It's the same ruling classes which built the Empire which is now encouraging mass immigration- it is a continuation of the exploitation-- not a recompense for it.
Reply:No. It is fine how it is now. You can't just let anyone into the country.

How to clean imperial polished marble?

I need to know how to get imperial polished marble floors clean. It is getting dingy, I need to strip %26amp; refinish. Also cleaning solution to clean floors

How to clean imperial polished marble?
Regular Cleaning

Occasionally wash marble surfaces with lukewarm water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Wiping surface with a damp chamois will not leave streaks. Once or twice a year, depending on soil, wash with a mild detergent solution (hand dish-washing detergent and warm water), rinse and wipe dry.

A light coat of wax will protect the surface of marble but is not considered essential. Use colorless wax. Don't wax white marble as it may tend to yellow it. A marble sealer can be applied to clean marble, which will protect from staining and allow soil to be wiped off with a damp cloth.

Special Cleaning

Marble which has become dull can be livened up by using a commercial marble cleaner and polish. Buy from a company that sells marble. Companies generally carry imported polish-cleaners, which are used on softer imported marbles and hence safe for the harder U.S. marble. They work faster and easier than the old "marble care kits" which used to be distributed by marble companies.

Putty powder (tin oxide) can be used to polish dulled or etched surfaces, rubbing on with a damp cloth, folding and refolding to clean damp areas, and preferably using an electric polisher for buffing. However it's very hard to find. Severely damaged surfaces, scratched or etched, can be polished by a business making and selling tombstones or other marble products.

Stain Removal

Make a poultice from white absorbent material such as a napkin, blotter, paper towel or facial tissue, dampened with the chemical recommended below to dissolve that stain; or mix whiting with that chemical to make a soft paste to cover the stain. The poultice should be left on the stain from 1 hour up to 48 hours, depending on the age and depth of the stain. Plastic wrap, held in place by masking tape, can be put over the poultice to keep it damp; otherwise it will have to be re-dampened with the chemical periodically. Mix only enough poultice for immediate use; mix a second batch later if another application is needed.

Organic Stains: Tea, coffee, colors bleached from paper, textiles or soft drinks. Make poultice soaked with 20 percent peroxide (hair bleaching strength) and a few drops of ammonia.

Oil Stains: Oil stains may include butter, hand cream or lotion. As soon as possible, spread surface with an absorbent fine powder such as whiting or even corn starch. After short time brush to remove and reapply more powder. Let stand 24 hours. To remove: Scrub with hot, sudsy (detergent) solution and stiff brush. Or wipe with ammonia-dampened cloth. In either case, then rinse and wipe dry. If these alkaline solutions don't remove all the oil, you can try a solvent. Make a poultice dampened with acetone or amyl acetate (available at drug stores), or with home dry cleaning fluid. Use good ventilation with windows open to remove fumes, do not use near spark or flame, and do not leave on too long.

Rust Stains: Usually the result of metal items such as a lamp, metal container in which plant is placed etc. Use a commercial rust stain remover. Follow directions exactly and do not leave on surface very long as acid in many rust removers can etch the surface.

Acids Fruit juice, carbonated beverages or other acids will etch (remove shiny surface) if allowed to remain on marble. Wipe up acid spill immediately, and wipe surface with wet cloth. If surfaced is etched, polishing may be required.

I'm looking into purchasing an imperial shih tzu for my girlfriend. Does anyone have any info on the breed?

I just want to know the pros and cons about the breed and see if it is the right fit for our family.

I'm looking into purchasing an imperial shih tzu for my girlfriend. Does anyone have any info on the breed?
There is no such thing as an Imperial or Tiny Teacup Shih Tzu. These are just ill breed dogs who are the runt of the litter. They will have many health problems. There are many Shih tzu's on petfinder.com or in rescues. Generally, small dogs are difficult to housetrain and shouldn't be in a home with kids that don't know how to safely handle small breeds. Many people come into my vets office with a toy-sized puppy with broken bones from being stepped on or dropped. Some come in dead. If you are going to buy a shih tzu instead of rescuing then go through an akc breeder - they will not sell you a "teacup" or "imperial" puppy that is going to be sick its whole life, but a healthy dog with a good temperment. Stay away from backyard breeders. It will save you hundreds in vet bills.
Reply:All these people are nuts. We all know dogs have been bred for size for ages! I've had smaller bred shih tzus (Paris and Nicky) for years. Dare I call them "imperial" I would hate for someone and their "opinion" to try to rip me a new one. lol!!! Both my girls are 6lbs. I brought them home at 12 weeks and they weighed 2lbs. They are companion dogs...that is what were bred for! They want to be with you all the time. They are wonderful pets, i have never had problems but just like people we/they are all different. (I don't wear glasses but my twin does... go figure) Expect to pay more and expect to spend lots on upkeep but isn't that the idea if you're choosing a Shih Tzu in the first place??? Don't overlook the rescue groups, there are lots out there and they have puppies and mature dogs. It's not necessarily a dog from a puppy mill, keep in mind that some people pass away and there is no one to take care of their most precious possession.

One word of wisdom however... giving someone a pet of any kind if a major responsibility. Make sure you think the decision through fully... think about travel and over night stays. Think about vet costs, think about grooming and CLOTHES (they have to look good too) DO NOT fail at researching your breeder or the rescue group, I could imagine nothing worse than getting a puppy/dog only to have it become ill.

There are always bad people out there breeding puppies but they're bad people everywhere. There are good ones too! I'm in TN and if you're anywhere nearby I could give you some contact information.

NEVER,EVER buy on-line OR from a petstore OR a classified! *ONLY* CRAP from CROOKS is EVER available! ONLY buy DIRECT from a REPUTABLE breeder!
Reply:Breeding for the small size can result in severe congenital defects. Also, a dog under 5 pounds or so is more like a hamster in that you have to constantly protect it. I actually had to buy a "watch dog" for my 3 pound dog so that she could go out in the yard without worrying about owls, etc.

Any dog with long hair is going to be high maintenance, and any dog with a shortened snout will be prone to allergies and be at risk from the heat.

That's not to say that that isn't the dog for you and your GF, but be aware of the requirements of the dog before you buy.

Good luck, and good for you for asking.
Reply:I have a Shih Tzu. She is the best dog I've ever had, I love her dearly. My daughter owns two Shih Tzu's. They make great lap dogs. They are very "one person" oriented. They do not make good pets for people with small children. They have real hair and won't shed, however, because the hair grows, they need to be taken to the groomer for hair cuts. They are also known for medical problems, allergies, etc. My dog has problems with her thyroid and has terrible allergies, and is borderline Cushings Disease. She is by far the most expensive dog we've ever owned. Between her medical costs and medicine, hair cuts and special organic food, I spend around $200 per month on her. They are great companions and I wouldn't trade her for all the money in the world.
Reply:What does "Imperial" Shih Tzu mean according to Websters Dictionary? Of Superior or Unusual Size or Excellence.

'Imps' are 3 - 7 lbs. Ideally the male is under 7 lbs and the female under 8 lbs. Puppies are very loyal and make wonderful pets and companions with exceptional personalities. May even be loving and trusting to a fault. Imps don't understand that someone may not like them or that something bad might happen to them, they are slow to recognize aggression from other dogs or animals. They will walk up to any dog and go nose to nose, wagging their tails, especially other Imps.

It is extremely important to use a pet shampoo, not a product made for people. Using products made for people can really dry out a dog's coat. Bathe at least every other week. The short muzzle of a Shih Tzu causes them to place their face very close to things in order to smell them causing their face to frequently get dirty. The short muzzle can also cause more tearing than in the long muzzle breeds. Their face will need cleaning at least twice a week. Use a soft toothbrush to wash under the eye area and rinse well. If your Shih Tzu gets their feet dirty outside everyday, just wash the feet. Bathing too often will remove the natural oils necessary for a shiny, healthy coat. Brush them before AND after you bathe them. Brushing before makes the brushing afterward part much easier. Place some cotton balls in their ears before the bath. Water in the ears is one of the most common causes of ear infections. Please remember to remove these once you are done with the bath! Express the anal gland during bathing. This is a small sac right inside the anus that fills with a brownish fluid. Consult your vet or groomer if you need help. Be sure to blow dry thoroughly. If you choose not to bathe them yourself, try to find a groomer that will groom by individual appointment so that your puppy does not have to spend the entire day in a crate, that can be very stressful on a dog at any age. Make sure you find a reputable groomer. Holding down a wiggling puppy can be very stressful for them. Too much pressure and your puppy could develop health problems. You should bathe them yourself the first 4 months or so. That will help them get used to the bath and blow drier. They will not be as frightened during their first trip to the groomer. Coat needs to be brushed very often to prevent matted hair from forming. Change to a comb when grooming your Shih Tzu face, feet and under its ears. Pay special attention to the hairs in-between the feet pads. You should remove excess hair from its ear canal. Apply an ear powder to the hair in the ear canal and gently pull. teeth are prone to plaque, calculus, gingivitis and other periodontal disease. Housetraining means that you are training your puppy to urinate/defecate outdoors. Remember that your shih tzu wants to please you and will try its hardest to do just that. Your puppy will learn faster if you use positive praise and affection. - When you are unable to be home (or unable to pay 100% attention to the pup) never give your puppy full access of the house before they are one year of age. They are still too immature at this time of their life. Confining them while you are away or busy (in room with child safety gate) is the safe choice as well as the best and easiest way to housetrain. Or use a crate.
Reply:"Imperial" Shih Tzus are 3 1/2 to 6 pounds at maturity. The correct term is "Imperial" Shih Tzu not teacup Shih Tzu. http://www.shihtzu.org/Info/imperial.asp... This link gives you the information you will want to be aware of when purchasing a Shih Tzu.
Reply:My wife and I had one and it lived for 17 years. He was difficult to train and was only good as a companion dog. He had skin allergies and ear infections all the time. Grooming was time consuming and expensive.

He died about two months ago and we will not have another one.

I know this is negative, but I wish I would have been more careful in my selection of a high maintenance dog.

What is the difference between Imperial Morganite and Morganite?

Morganite is the pink variety of beryl, named after famous American banker and gemstone enthusiast John Pierpont Morgan.

Imperial morganite is the trade (brand) name used to describe vibrant purplish red color morganite from Mozambique

The difference is in the color and marketing technique, which is very common in the gem trade ( using names like imperial topaz, pigeon blood ruby, etc)

An example of what can be called imperial morganite: http://www.icgems.com/gemstones/detail/?...

What is the difference between Imperial Morganite and Morganite?
Morganite is a member of the beryl family that includes emerald. It used to be called just plain old "pink beryl". Remember that synthetic morganite is around so beware of bargains. Don't spend too much time looking for inclusions - you probably wouldn't find any in natural stone.

Natural Morganits is often heated to improve its colour. As with all coloured gemstones the depth and evenness of the colour are all important. So a very pale pink should be a lot less than a deeper salmon pink.

"Imperial" is a term used loosely to denote high quality - though unfortunately in my experience this is often not the case. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.
Reply:I don't think there is any difference. The only places I can find reference to "Imperial Morganite" is in a couple of dozen jewelry catelogues... but even there they aren't saying "Impreial Morganite is better than Morganite."

As for what is Morganite - see the link

What Do You Think Emperor/Imperial Scorpion As A Pet ?

I want to get one for my dorm room, my roommate, said he wouldn't have a prob with it as long as its in the cage. Which it would be, and also it says they are very docile too. Which would make it good. I also could take it home during the winter break and bring it back.

I know the pet store has it for 16.99, the total would probably be around 50-60 for tank and bedding.

So what do you think? I don't want a fish, I though of a betta, but they really don't do anything.

What Do You Think Emperor/Imperial Scorpion As A Pet ?
Hey, as long as it's not bothering anyone and the dorm allows it...I say go for it...

How would you characterise the constitutional andpolitical systems of Imperial Germany?

A mix of democracy and autocracy, leaning toward the latter. Democracy elected the lower house. However, the lower house was controlled by the chancellor, who was appointed by the Kaiser. The upper house was also appointed by the Kaiser, each region of Germany having a quota of delegates. Prussia had 51% of the delegates here, significant considering the Kaiser and the chancellor (up to 1891) were also Prussian. Therefore Prussia controlled the rest of Germany.

A bill presented by the lower house, the democratically elected body, had to be approved by the upper and by the Kaiser before it became law.

In conclusion, Imperial Germany can be said to have been an autocracy with a facade of democracy.

How would you characterise the constitutional andpolitical systems of Imperial Germany?
A Feudal Monarchy.

Why was india seen as the most important imperial possesion to britain in the period leading up to 1947?
It was rich, well organised and strategically placed so as to be within easy reach of most parts of the world. It provided magnificent products which could be traded all over the world through the East India Company. On 31 December 1600 Queen Elizabeth I granted a royal charter to the British East India Company to carry out trade with the East. Ships first arrived in India in 1608, docking at Surat in modern-day Gujarat. Four years later, British traders defeated the Portuguese at the Battle of Swally, gaining the favour of the Mughal emperor Jahangir in the process. In 1615, King James I sent Sir Thomas Roe as his ambassador to Jahangir's court, and a commercial treaty was concluded in which the Mughals allowed the Company to build trading posts in India in return for goods from Europe. The Company traded in such commodities as cotton, silk, saltpetre, indigo, and tea.

By the mid-1600s, the Company had established trading posts or "factories" in major Indian cities, such as Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras in addition to their first factory at Surat (built in 1612). In 1670 King Charles II granted the company the right to acquire territory, raise an army, mint its own money, and exercise legal jurisdiction in areas under its control.

By the last decade of the 17th century, the Company was arguably its own "nation" on the Indian subcontinent, possessing considerable military might and ruling three presidencies.

Reply:During the Empire, India was known as the 'Jewel in the Crown'

It was won without a fight, since it was taken by a commercial company 'the East India Company' - known as 'John Company'. This trading company came to agreements with the ruling princes, they didn't rape, plunder or kill.

At the turn of the 20th Century, the people who went out to India did not show so much understanding for the Indian people - in fact they began to consider themselves as superior. And that's when things really started to fall apart.

Many Brits of my generation (b. 1943) still have memories of stories told by their parents or grandparents. For many of us, India is, and will remain, an integral part of our heritage. I was so pleases when my daughter, now 35 and who had been in India twice as a child, went there this Christmas. I think she now understands the family connections and has learned to love India as I do.

No one can ignore four hundred years of history. There is a spiritual connection. Ethnically I'm Anglo-Saxon, my heart is in Kurdistan, but my soul belongs to India.

I don't think I'm alone in thinking my soul belongs to India. As I said before, 'the Jewel in the Crown.'
Reply:Hi there. the other guys make some good points - and some incorrect ones. We can sum it up - wealth.

India has always been a powerhouse of wealth because of its tight societies and huge population. The British took India a little piece at a time, often with a fight (see the career of "Clive of India" and the battle of Plassey!) BUT - India was not particularly backward, just very poorly governed. When the ruling class had been subverted or ousted, the British could take over and the underlying structure of society remained! This could be redirected into what the British wanted (i.e. used to make lots of money) easily and the Indian people very adaptable.

So having initially been taken over by businesses to make money, India eventually came under the crown after the great mutiny (the great mutiny which involved only a fraction of the people of India in reality).

A huge nation, intelligent, hard working and structured, with all kinds of products (spices, cloths, gems) - no wonder it was the most important!

Other colonies had similar things (Hong Kong was very wealthy, Canada huge resources, etc) but India had it in vast amounts.

Why do some countries still insist on using imperial measurements?

And at the same time, using decimal currency?

Why do some countries still insist on using imperial measurements?
Imperial measurements were used throughout the British Empire which covered one third of the world. and of course included America.

It doesn't help of course that the early americans got mixed up with their measurements and because there was 16 ounces in a pound assumed there must be 16 fluid ounces in a pint when of course any person with education new it was 20! Thats why a US gallon is 20% less than an Imperial Gallon.

It was also too complicated for them to remember that 8 stone(112 lbs) was a hundred weight (cwt) so they said there were 100 lbs in a cwt so a ton (20 cwt) became 2000lbs when of course it is actually 2240lbs.

The EU has just given up on forcing the UK to go completely metric.

The drive to metrication was politically motivated . It was supposed to bring us closer to our EU neighbours and help us forget that we used to be the most powerful country in the world..

The fact it still hasn't been completed is down to the refusal of the population to accept it.

Next year it will become a criminal offence to show imperial weights ie pounds and ounces yet the EU has given up on trying to get us to give up our pints of beer.

About a year ago a major supermarket chain stopped labelling in both lbs and metric. Their trade dropped so much that they went back to showing the imperial measure after only 3 weeks.

all of Europe and the UK, Australia, NZ use metric. Some older rural parts of Wales and Ireland still use Imperial, but that's because of paroquial reluctance to chance (no offense anyone - I AM Irish!!)

so, I'm sorry to say i think it's just the americans who use Imperial. maybe Canada?

How were boys and men castracted in imperial China and the castratis in Europe?

The practice of castration has its roots before recorded human history.[1] Castration was frequently used in certain cultures of Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa and China, for religious or social reasons. Castrated men — eunuchs — were often admitted to special social classes and were used particularly to staff bureaucracies and palace households: in particular, the harem.

In ancient times, castration often involved the total removal of all the male genitalia. This involved great danger of death due to bleeding or infection and, in some states, such as the Byzantine Empire, was seen as the same as a death sentence. Removal of only the testicles had much less risk.

In China, male castration of a person who entered the caste of eunuchs during imperial times involved the removal of the whole genitalia, that is, the removal of the testes, penis, and scrotum. The removed organs were returned to the eunuch to be interred with him when he died so that, upon rebirth, he could become a whole man again. The penis, testicles and scrotum were euphemistically termed bǎo (寶) in Mandarin Chinese, which literally means 'precious treasure'. These were preserved in alcohol and kept in a pottery jar by the eunuch.

The golden age of castrati lasted for two centuries, from the beginning of the 17th Century to the dawn of the 19th Century. Officially admitted into the Papal choir from 1599, they performed in all large towns throughout Italy. First, they sang exclusively in religious choirs, however, they soon became used in musical dramas. In the 18th Century, a musical form known as "Opera Seria" was created for them. The last castrato, Alessandro Moreschi died in 1922.

The usual explanation given to justify the use of castrati was that women were forbidden to sing in church choirs or theatres in the papal states. However, their vocal supremacy was the real reason for their extraordinary popularity. They were frequently described as having the 'voice of angels'. This was no doubt due to the combination of a child's fresh voice with the vocal power of a man, and the high register of a woman. However, their particular brilliance, their unusual degree of expression, flexibility, purity and the ease with which they moved from one register to another, was unquestionably, the result of many hours of hard work with famous teachers such as Porpora, in the Conservatoires.

The whole of Europe was infatuated with castrati. They were adored where ever they performed. In Austria, England, Germany, Poland and Russia they were received as deliriously at the courts of Emperors and Tsars as at public theatres. They were idolized as much as today's androgynous rock stars such as Michael Jackson, David Bowie or Prince who, two centuries later, have the same international notoriety and delight crowds around the world.

* The Castratis', a group of men who were castrated in order to preserve there boy like quality in their voice, were a very popular breed of Opera singers. One of the most famous castrati's includes Farinelli, who was one the last Castratis'.

Unlike the eunuchs of China, the castrati of Europe ordinarily only had the testes removed.

In REALITY, what MOTIVES or PRETEXES did the Imperial Government of Japan have, to order the military?

BOMBING Of THE OF THE MILITARY BASE IN PEARL HARBOUR OF USA´S IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT?

In REALITY, what MOTIVES or PRETEXES did the Imperial Government of Japan have, to order the military?
The motive of the Imperial Government was to cripple the U.S. Pacific Fleet to the point that the U.S. Government would reach an armistice or peace treaty allowing Japan access to the fueling stations in the Pacific Ocean Japan needed to maintain and expand its empire. The war planners in Japan never anticipated invading or occupying the U.S. mainland - They just wanted to make sure they could continue building their own Asian/Oceanic Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere. Their plan might have been able to work if the bombing of Pearl Harbor had destroyed the carrier fleet rather than part of the battleship inventory: The U.S. Navy's contribution to total victory in the Pacific was primarily one of Carrier groups destroying the Japanese Navy.
Reply:Militarism - you know its based on the believe in your own invincebility, a very blind motive. The Japanese had the most powerful navy in the world. so they decided that they can bully everybody around. Pearl Harbor, was one of their gorssest mistakes though, since they didn't do any real damage to the US with that. On the other hand US, as you know damaged Japan A LOT.
Reply:The mobilization of bomber planes by the US. The Japanese were led to believe the planes were intended for the bombing of Japan. The US baited Japan into war in order to expand westward.

The myth of the surprise attack has been uncovered for quite a while. The US never had an intention to stay out of the war. It simply needed to convince the population by feigning a casus belli.
Reply:The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour for a number of reasons, the main being President Roosevelt banning all exports of scrap iron, steel and oil to Japan. Japan had lost more than 90% of its oil supply). Other causes which sparked the attack included; the belief that Japan was becoming encircled by Western powers, the fear of resources such as oil running low, the strong determination of advancing in the East Asia region, the United States demanding Japanese withdrawal from Indo-China, the United States opposing Japanese expansion and Japans demands were not being achieved by diplomacy. The Japanese were keen on expanding their empire and had to make a decision between surrendering or going to war with the United States.
Reply:The same motives that Hitler had:

Invincibility and not seeing the resources other countries had.

I am not going to discuss wether the US government had approriate information and didn´t use those ( to enter the war) or not.

Both the Japanese government and Hitler overestimated themselfs and the resources they had.

I am German.
Reply:The pretext of the military, which had control of Japan at this time, was colonization. They felt that since other European countries, [ie: France, Britain and Germany], were colonizing N. Africa and the Pacific Islands, that they should be able to.

They joined what was loosely called a 'triumvirate' of three countries. Germany, Italy and Japan, who were allies against Europe and the U.S.

Also, the military hierarchy had their own agenda, and was controlled by someone, [General Tojo], who disliked the U.S. for his own reasons.

Although some of the military, especially one Admiral, did not altogether agree on the methods, or beginning a war, they began it anyway.....and we ended it!
Reply:As stated above the main reason that the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor was that fact that with the embargo of raw materials to japan and the British and Dutch control of the raw material that they needed the nation of Japan felt that in the interest of national security they need to strike first and remove the American threat from the pacific rim so they could secure the raw material controlled by the British and Dutch and not have to worry of America coming to the aid of the Dutch and British

What is the interview at Imperial College of London like?

I have applied for a MSc degree in Computing and have been invited for an interview. What are they exactly looking for in the interview?

What is the interview at Imperial College of London like?
Key interview questions are always going to center around why you want to enter this program and how you will work to achieve the goals and objectives of said program.

See, colleges make money by "selling" credit hours, so from a financial standpoint, they do not want a bunch of students who come in, take up class space and then fail to finish a program. This would mean that out of the potential 120-180 credits in an undergrad program, say only 30 are completed, thus they lost 90-150 credits worth of revenue.

The MSc degree of course is more specialized and requires research work and dedication that is much more in-depth and difficult as compared to undergraduate work, thus they are looking to see if you answer questions well enough to show aptitude to succeed under the greater demands of graduate study. Assignments will no longer take a "standard" shape, instead you will be told to research a computer program of your choosing and find ways to improve its functionality by redesiging the GUI, for example. This means that you no only will turn in work that is just like your other classmates, in fact, most of your assignments and exams will be very individual in nature.

So back to the interview, well the main points or goals of their side of the interview is to see how you react to and will likely do in this new form of learning. Remember, high school students that did well in high school, do not always do well in undergraduate studies, the same can be said for those moving from undergrad into the graduate world. The final interview process of course is for post-grad work (PH.D and Doctoral) which one day you might have the pleasure (or pain, depending on your view of it) of going through.

Remember, go in with a clear set of goals and objectives, such as what you find interesting, that you are there to learn and contribute to the success of the University and that you feel this degree will help you reach your long-term strategic career goals/plans. If you keep those in mind and then use your own ideas and experiences to highlight your past and current experiences, you will do just fine!

Good luck!

What are the officer ranks in the Australia Imperial Forcesfrom most senior to least senior?

My understanding is that the ranks used in the AIF were the same as those used in the regular army. The second AIF was commanded by Lieutenant General Blamey. Flag officers (those from Brigader and above) were recruited solely from regularl forces, while Colonel down were a mixture of both. The officer ranks are (from snr to jnr) General, Lieutenant General, Major General, Brigader General, Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, and 2nd Lieutenant. Depending on background (job, education etc), a volunteer could be placed in any rank up to Lieutenant Colonel. The non-com ranks from snr to jnr are Warrant Officer 1 (WO1), WO2, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant, Corporal, Lance Corporal and Private. Warrant Officers were taken from regular forces in the early stages of the war, and used to instil discipline in the troops.

I was going to answer this but you wont get a better answer than "as above" !

How did the growth of industrial capitalism influence imperial expansion?

For the United Sates, it carried over to the need for Empire!

Alfred Thayer Mahan proposed that the US would have to gain territory to increase trade and provide markets for our goods.

Therefore, leaders like Teddy Roosevelt became proponents of expansion.

Mahan's famous work - The Influence of Seapower Upon History - stated that all great powers had colonies and created empire. Mahan and Roosevelt were friends TR read Mahan's book before it went to the publisher and TR sated that he agreed fully w/ Mahan's assertions.

This may give basis for Roosevelt to say in regard to Panama, "I took Panama." There was no insurrection....It was Mahan's beliefs in action.

Mac - when you have read Mahan's Influence of Seapower, and have realized that it has been taught at the naval academy, then you may critique...Mahan was a Naval Historian and TR worshiped him...

.

.

How did the growth of industrial capitalism influence imperial expansion?
Don't confuse capitalism for mercantilism.

The need for imperial expansion was influenced by Mercantilism and not by capitalism.

Capitalism is self-contained and its market economy has no need of expansion. Any country can remain isolationist and be capitalist, such as the USA just before WWI and WWII. America was an isolationist and capitalist country in 1914 and in 1939.

Mecantilism demands expansion in-order to acquire wealth by physical means - you take from someone else to get rich. And to force other nations to buy your products - exports must exceed imports.

Capitalism with an active stock market generates wealth from within. Capitalism does not promote imperial expansion, mercantilism does.

Why in the USA do they still use imperial measurements ie inches?

They dont make any sense. Metric has water freeze at 0, boil at 100. Measurements work on a system of 10's (10mm in a cm, 10 cm in a dm, 10 dm in a meter, 1000m in a km). Where did the whole idea of having 12 inches in a foot and 3 feet in a yard come from? It makes no sense.

Why in the USA do they still use imperial measurements ie inches?
I think the simple answer is because they can't be bothered.

They have grown up using inches and feet and miles etc and learning a whole new set of units is too much effort.

In the UK we have been undergoing a process of changeover since the 1830s or so. Metric units had to be used in schools from the 1950s but still old people use imperial. The majority of people know about metric but don't use it enough to get used to it. I have never met anyone who actually knows their weight in Kg.
Reply:It'd be nice if people knew that weight isn't measured in Kg whatever that unit is. Could it be kilograms, no kilogram is kg, so it can't be. Report It

Reply:Because they probably like it
Reply:It really makes you wonder who won at Waterloo doesn't it?

The French were defeated and with that the metric system should be abolished. It's very basis and prime unit is the metre on which all else depends, and they even got that wrong didn't they.

I can use either system, but I note it's the people who can only use the metric system that want Imperial abolished. I note though most of the metric advocates also use calculators, and are always putting the decimal point in the wrong place.

Well done USA don't listen to humbug.
Reply:most of us were taught in inches feet and yards. however many like myself had to learn the metric system in college or fail math chemistry and physics
Reply:When you are big brother, you call the shots.

On a similar vein, why don't the whole world standarize the power plug. Standardize the TV format (NTSC, PAL, SECAM, etc). Standardize Traffic, left-hand drive, right-hand drive? Standardize American/English spelling? .... Standardize ONE LANGUAGE.
Reply:Probably because people in the US don't realise how much it costs them along with the fact that the government is too busy keeping their oil flowing to change to a better measuring system.
Reply:becuase its COOL...

Japan’s nationalism and rise as an imperial power can be traced back to?

A. the way it chose to respond to Western interest in Japan.

B. the United States’ decision to negotiate trade agreements with Japan.

C. the outcome of the Sino-Japanese War.

D. the civil war in which rebels defeated the Tokugawa shogun.

Japan’s nationalism and rise as an imperial power can be traced back to?
D) because that led to fierce xenophobia, in which massive amounts of Dutch were butchered. Also, this nationalism fueled a very efficient economy, at least in comparison with the rest of Asia. The Meiji emperor was critical as well, espoused major developments in technology and commerce.

Can someone tell me what a Chinese Imperial Dog/Puppy is?

I have seen them advertised everywhere with much controversy not far behind. Are they just indeed smaller (runt) Shih Tzus and this is liken to the teacup debate? or are they another breed altogether?

Can someone tell me what a Chinese Imperial Dog/Puppy is?
It is a way for backyard breeders and puppy mills to make more money.

Shih Tzus, per AKC standards are to be between 9 and 16 lbs. When I was recently looking for another puppy to add to my family, I found that there were a lot of breeders out there that are breeding Shih Tzus that are between 4 and 8 pounds.

These are what they are referring to as Imperials. They are nothing but runts! Many of them are prone to major health issues. It is unconscionable!

I breed Shih Tzus and would never, ever, intentionally breed for puppies that are not within AKC standards.

If you need more information on the Shih Tzu breed, please go to www.shihtzu.org
Reply:Yes, I know a breeder of these dogs and they are indeed smaller or teacup Shih Tzus. There is MUCH controversy among breeders saying they are breeding smaller variations to smaller ones to reduce the size. I have seen them and they are very cute to say the least but as a Vet. Canadians: How old are you & do you think in Metric or in Imperial measurements or both?

I'm 34 and remember the commercials for Metricification on TV.

I think in Celsius for temperature (though I know Fahreinheit too), miles for distances, km/h for wind speed, pounds for person weight, kg for grocery weight, and liters for liquid volumes

Totally mixed up.

Canadians: How old are you %26amp; do you think in Metric or in Imperial measurements or both?
Canadian and 54...I think in Celsius for temperature, pounds for meat, weight etc, (I can't really get that one), kilometers for miles, litres for liquids.
Reply:40 here.. and its km for distance driving, Fahreinheit for temperture, km/h for wind speed, pounds for a person's weight (and grocery weight).. and Cups/Quarts ( Imperial) for dealing with liquid volumes.

The older we are.. the more we used the old Imperial system.
Reply:its ok industrial arts never switched over in hs so learned metric for kms and litres of fuel and everything else is standard
Reply:CDN. About the same age. Totally metric, except weight and height which I use both.
Reply:you are not alone i think pretty much every canadien thinks that way i know i do
Reply:I lived in Canada for three years and I can do C and F for temp. Kg for food and stuff, pounds for person's weight miles per hour, I can do cm and inches though.
Reply:I am old enough to remember that crap but I still use pounds feet yards ounces and miles per hour.....Pierre Trudeau did this to confuse us all so we would never know how much we were paying for gas...In one night it goes from gallons to litres...40 cents a gallon to 30 cents al litre... WHICH is 110 a gallon...Even today convert it and see what the Americans pay for gas as compared to Canadians..Even if you payed the exchange on the dollar you would still get it cheaper in The U.S. Oh yeah then trudeau bough out that other gas company and started a crown corporation Petro Canada....Notice P E T...... initial of Pierre Eliiot Trudeau,,, forever immortalized...Smart guy EH.

still measured in board feet.
Reply:I think mostly imperial, but I wish I could think in metric
Reply:Over 50, so I no longer know how tall I am, how much I weigh, what the temperature is, or how far away a place is. And frankly, I don't really care anymore.

Most have trans fats in them and that will clog your arteries and in turn, cause you to have a heart attack or a stroke.

This is a lengthy article but gives alot of good pointers about the kinds of fats and which ones we need and don't need.

And beware ~ trans fat is hidden in many of our foods (such as popcorn) so you want to read labels and be careful. All the additives in food today is one reason so many Americans are now suffering more and more from health issues that have run rampant.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...

Also beware of foods that have aspertame, saccharin and sucrose / sucralose. I have just recently researched some of these after having health problems for several years and was appalled at what I have learned. I wish I had known this back in the 80s, I could have avoided so many health problems the last 20 years.

http://www.sweetpoison.com/

Sucrose is so bad that Canada was smart enough to outlaw it's use in their foods. Not greedy America, though, where the LOVE of MONEY sure IS the root of all evil. Companies here don't care who they poison, just so they get the almighty dollar (which will burn in hell with them for their greedy ways)

And keep riding your bike to work and other places when you can. The exercise is good for you and you have less chance of your arteries clogging up but still watch what you eat :)
Reply:I don't know of any "butter" in a tub, but if you're looking for a spread, or margarine (like Imperial is), I would suggest country Crock - get the one with added calcium. I have compared all the popular brands, and Country Crock with Calcium has the lowest cholesterol and saturated fat, and the highest monounsaturated fat, so it's the best overall for heart health.
Reply:I am a fan of Country Crock Spreadable Butter with Canola Oil - excellent flavor. I take it out of the fridge when preparing a meal so that is has time to soften by the time we eat.

MPG is measured by whatever region the vehicle is meant to be driven. It's also not a very exact measurement anyway, since it's measured in a building, not on the actual road.

The food was a disgrace, offering the most disgusting excuse for a breakfast/lunch buffet that I have ever witnessed. A few of the dinner items were OK but for the most part a complete joke.

The entire boat smelt like a sewer, and I don't mean that it smelt bad and I'm just comparing it to a sewer because sewers smell bad too...it seriously smelt like a sewer!!! They charge you for everything and the cabins are dirty and tattered (our bathroom towels were gray because they were so old and our sheets/towels/blankets all had holes in them with faded color because clearly they had been around since the '50's).

Never ever ever go on anything that has something to do with Imperial Majesty Cruise Lines. It is not a cruise, far from it! Just disgusting. My girlfriend got sick because of her allergy to mold, which the entire boat is covered in (but they do paint over the mold so that you can't see it, but you can still smell it. I'd like to think that they would clean it but apparently that is too much for Imperial Majesty to handle). I received a bacterial infection because of the lack of sanitary conditions, I got to spend 4 hours hooked up to an IV with a 103 degree fever in the Ft. Lauderdale Cleveland Clinic E-room What a great vacation (sarcastic)!!!

Hated the entire experience, Imperial Majesty is just a painfully dreadful company. Please do not go, you WILL regret it!
Reply:There are many free beaches in Nassau. There may be someone there renting umbrellas which is how theymake their living. You also don't pay to go shopping.

I think you are referring to the excursions that are offerred by the cruise line which may be private beaches with or without shopping time and yes, those you do pay for.

The Imperial Majesty "freebies" sound like you took the tour of the Ramada Resorts time share program. they have been using this promo for years now. The ship itself is an old ship but actually not that bad. Food is decent and the service is quite good. Cabins are small and nothing fancy about them. It is a nice little 2 night trip. We've done it ourselves for a little getaway from S. FL.

You will pay a fuel surcharge, port and gov't fees, and gratuities so will not be totally free.

You will get a kick out of the elevator which can only hold 5 people and they better be small %26lt;grin%26gt;

But have a good time.

How did Japan rise from an isolated society to a major industrial and imperial power?

In 1867/68, the Tokugawa era found an end in the Meiji Restoration. The emperor Meiji was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo which became the new capital; his imperial power was restored. The actual political power was transferred from the Tokugawa Bakufu into the hands of a small group of nobles and former samurai.

Like other subjugated Asian nations, the Japanese were forced to sign unequal treaties with Western powers. These treaties granted the Westerners one-sided economical and legal advantages in Japan. In order to regain independence from the Europeans and Americans and establish herself as a respected nation in the world, Meiji Japan was determined to close the gap to the Western powers economically and militarily. Drastic reforms were carried out in practically all areas.

The new government aimed to make Japan a democratic state with equality among all its people. The boundaries between the social classes of Tokugawa Japan were gradually broken down. Consequently, the samurai were the big losers of those social reforms since they lost all their privileges. The reforms also included the establishment of human rights such as religious freedom in 1873.

In order to stabilize the new government, the former feudal lords (daimyo) had to return all their lands to the emperor. This was achieved already in 1870 and followed by the restructuring of the country in prefectures.

The education system was reformed after the French and later after the German system. Among those reforms was the introduction of compulsory education.

After about one to two decades of intensive westernization, a revival of conservative and nationalistic feelings took place: principles of Confucianism and Shinto including the worship of the emperor were increasingly emphasized and taught at educational institutions.

Catching up on the military sector was, of course, a high priority for Japan in an era of European and American imperialism. Universal conscription was introduced, and a new army modelled after the Prussian force, and a navy after the British one were established.

In order to transform the agrarian economy of Tokugawa Japan into a developed industrial one, many Japanese scholars were sent abroad to study Western science and languages, while foreign experts taught in Japan. The transportation and communication networks were improved by means of large governmental investments. The government also directly supported the prospering of businesses and industries, especially the large and powerful family businesses called zaibatsu.

The large expenditures led to a financial crisis in the middle of the 1880's which was followed by a reform of the currency system and the establishment of the Bank of Japan. The textile industry grew fastest and remained the largest Japanese industry until WW2. Work conditions in the early factories were very bad, but developing socialist and liberal movements were soon suppressed by the ruling clique.

On the political sector, Japan received its first European style constitution in 1889. A parliament, the Diet was established while the emperor kept sovereignty: he stood at the top of the army, navy, executive and legislative power. The ruling clique, however, kept on holding the actual power, and the able and intelligent emperor Meiji agreed with most of their actions. Political parties did not yet gain real power due to the lack of unity among their members.

Conflicts of interests in Korea between China and Japan led to the Sino-Japanese War in 1894-95. Japan defeated China, received Taiwan, but was forced by Russia, France and Germany to return other territories. The so called Triple Intervention caused the Japanese army and navy to intensify their rearmament.

New conflicts of interests in Korea and Manchuria, this time between Russia and Japan, led to the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-05. The Japanese army also won this war gaining territory and finally some international respect. Japan further increased her influence on Korea and annexed her completely in 1910. In Japan, the war successes caused nationalism to increase even more, and other Asian nations also started to develop national self confidence.

How did Japan rise from an isolated society to a major industrial and imperial power?
the same way we did (US)
Reply:They have spent their resources on research, development, and the people of Japan - INSTEAD OF THE MILITARY.

Since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan has had essentially no military.

Nice, huh?
Reply:Getting involved in war will do that to a country.

Limitless funds, usually by taxing the snot out the population, for development of technology rapidly industrializes a nation. It's not only Japan.

I need to the recipe for crab inperial. I know you have to have crab meat, fish. I need to know what you put in the crab meat mixture

What is the recipe for crab imperial?
I found this one on line at epicurious.com

EASTERN SHORE CRAB IMPERIAL

On Maryland's Eastern shore, watermen make a living pulling the "beautiful swimmers" (blue crabs) out of Chesapeake Bay. This recipe was given to me many years ago by a waterman's wife — pre-food-processor.

Note: This one's for the mini food processor because amounts are small.

1 pound lump crabmeat, bits of shell and cartilage removed

2 slices firm-textured white bread

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

2 tablespoons curly parsley leaves, rinsed and wrung dry in paper toweling

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Pinch ground hot red pepper (cayenne)

2/3 cup mayonnaise (use light, if you like)

1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly coat 6 large scallop shells with nonstick cooking spray or, if you prefer, lightly coat a 6-cup au gratin pan or shallow casserole; set aside. Place the crab in a medium-size mixing bowl and set aside also.

2. Tear the bread into small chunks, letting them drop into a mini food processor fitted with the metal chopping blade. Using 3 to 4 brisk pulses, reduce to moderately coarse crumbs. Drizzle the melted butter over all and pulse 2 to 3 times to incorporate. The crumbs should now be moderately fine. Tip onto a piece of wax paper and reserve.

3. Add the parsley, salt, black pepper, and cayenne to the processor (no need to wash the bowl or blade), and pulse briskly 3 to 5 times until the parsley is coarsely chopped.

4. Add the mayonnaise and mustard and churn until smooth, about 5 seconds. Scoop on top of the crab and toss lightly to mix.

5. Mound the crab mixture in the scallop shells or spread evenly in the au gratin dish, and scatter the buttered crumbs on top.

6. Bake uncovered on the middle oven rack until bubbling and touched with brown, 12 to 15 minutes.

7. Serve at once, accompanying with a tartly dressed salad of greens. Roasted asparagus spears also make a delicious accompaniment.

Makes 6 servings.

How much (in metric or imperial) is an American "cup" measure when used in recipes?

It differs according to the ingredient

1 cup of flour is 5oz or 140 g

1 cup of granulated sugar/or hard fat is 8oz or 225 g

1 cup of sultanas/raisins/uncooked rice is 7oz or 200 g

1 cup of grated cheese is 4oz or 110 g

and so on.

How much (in metric or imperial) is an American "cup" measure when used in recipes?
It depends what the ingredient is- if it is liquid then 240ml, if solid then it varies.
Reply:About 236ml.
Reply:In Canada, our measuring cups usually equate 250 ml with 1 cup, even thought he exact conversion is like Lewis said. My metric measuring cups are labelled 125 ml for the 1/2 cup and 250 ml for the cup.

I have a recipe in American "cups". Can anyone tell me what the equivalent is in either imperial or metric?

The ingredients in cups are butter, sugar and flour if that makes a difference.

I have a recipe in American "cups". Can anyone tell me what the equivalent is in either imperial or metric?
Yes it does make a difference. Cups are a measure of volume, and as different ingredients have different densities, a cupful of butter would not weigh the same as a cupful of sugar.

See the links for cups to grams conversion of a number of everyday ingredients.
Reply:This is a reply for a question you asked me earlier, here is the whole story :essex huricane appeal, hope you enjoy it

A major hurricane (Shazza) and earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Essex in the early hours of Friday with its epicentre in Basildon.

Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering "faaackinell".

The hurricane decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage.

Several priceless collections of mementos from Majorca and the Costa Del Sol were damaged beyond repair.

Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed.

Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived.

Essex FM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Basildon.

One resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Megan-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was watching Trisha the next morning."

Apparently though, looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal.

The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to help the stricken locals.

Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and Bone China from Poundland.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster. Clothing is

most sought after - items most needed include:

-- Fila or Burberry baseball caps

-- Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers)

-- Shell suits (female)

-- White sport socks

-- Rockport boots

-- Any other items usually sold in Primark.

Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.

Required foodstuffs include:

-- Microwave meals

-- Tins of baked beans

-- Ice cream

-- Cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew.

'where are you bleeding from?' they asked," ROMFORD" said the girl, "woss that gotta do wiv you?"
Reply:The second link provided by the first poster is the one I use if I need to convert, but it's easy enough to find measuring cups in the shops nowadays. Most of the bigger supermarkets stock them and any good independent bakeware shop should carry them too. I got mine from Tescos for under a fiver but have seen them in Asda and Sainsburys too, as well as Fenwicks (slightly more expensive) and I believe Lakeland do some too.
Reply:Manual conversions aren't easy - the link in the first answer is good though.

If you can't be bothered to work it out or buy a cheap set of cups (i picked some up for about £2), for most recipes you can just use a normal cup - an american cup is roughly the size of a teacup - just be sure to use the same size cup throughout your recipe and be careful about judging the half cups etc. It's just about judging the ratio of ingredients. Very few recipes need you to be precise enough that you can't use this method.

What are the main differences between the metric and imperial (American) systems of measurement?

How many pounds in a kilogram? If something weights 64 KGs how many pounds is that?

What are the main differences between the metric and imperial (American) systems of measurement?
1 kilogram = 2.20462262 pounds

64 KG = 141.09584768
Reply:2.2 lbs per kg. 64x2.2=140.8 lbs.

The main difference is that the metric system is a breeze to use, and all the scientific measurements are given in metric. Since it's a system based on 10, every measurement is divisble by 10, in terms of scaling up and down. In other words, a yardstick is divided by 36 inches. A meterstick (about 39 inches) is divided into 100 parts. So, if you need to convert centimeters to meters, you just multiply by 100. (Instead of yards to feet, or feet to inches).

Furthermore, every measurement in the metric system is defined by another measurement. For instance, a ml of water is a cubed centimeter of water. A calorie is the amount of energy that it takes to raise one ml of water one degree C. The temp. scale freezes at 0 and boils at 100. It's all good stuff. If you ever take chemistry or physics, you will really appreciate the metric system.

Mine's at 40, but I want to be not be kos to the city, what do I do?

How do you lower your bounty for the imperial city in Oblivion?
There are three ways to lower you bounty. The first way is to pay it off by choosing the "Pay Fines" option when a guard confronts you. The second way to get rid of your bounty is to serve your sentence by choosing "Go to Jail" when a guard confronts you. The last way is to tell Armand (in the Thieves' Guild) and he will settle it for half of your bounty.
Reply:Thieves' Guild would get rid of it for you...
