in the time of the British empire
What was the most important reason for British Imperial Expansion and why??
People write doctoral dissertations on this question, and there is a large number of books published about this very subject.
The British Empire had a long life, and what motivated Elizabeth I was somewhat different from what motivated King George III. Elizabethan England was a place of rabid hatred for Catholics and hence for the Catholic power of Spain. Elizabeth gave permission to pirates to raid Spanish shipping, which eventually drove Philip the II to declare war on England and launch the Spanish Armada, which of course failed. Elizabeth also stepped up military pressure on Ireland, which was regarded as a hostile power. It was, but Ireland had no navy and was a poor country. The likelihood of Ireland launching an attack on England was remote at best. But the English monarchy continued to view Ireland as hostile, and Ireland was finally completely conquered. Ireland was England's first colony. Massive numbers of angry Scots Protestants took plantations in Ireland and subjected the Irish to terrible oppression. The Anglo-Scots banned the practise of the Catholic religion, banned the speaking of Gaelic, banned the exportation of all kinds of agricultural products, and crushed the bards, who were the most highly educated part of the population. They reduced the Irish to a nation of servants and potato farmers. The Irish rebelled very nearly every generation until the successful Easter Rebellion of 1916, which drove the British to compromise
And this is only part of the story of one colony.
Reply:Money! The Jewel in the Crown (India) started with 'John Company' - the East India Trading Company.
Reply:Power and money
England had the ships and the men to go and travel the World when we found a piece of land we named it then claimed it.
If a country had wealth we took it and any assets we striped them. The truth being are great great grandfathers were the biggest thieving Ba***ds going.
Homework done, good luck
Reply:Probably because the 'British Empire' of the time, were the leading light for all nations.
Without the British Empire, countries such as America and Australia would not exist. And without the innovation of British scientists, the world would still be endeavouring to construct the wheel.

Reply:The most important reason for expansion was to make us rich!
Reply:I would opt for Cromwell. Although before hand there was small movements into the New World by English and Scottish settlers it was not until Cromwell came to power that a full real effort was made to colonise parts of America, Africa and start searching for other areas of the globe.
Reply:we robbed every nation of its riches and claimed it as ours.we were thieves murderers and total bounders.and still are.
