Why in the USA do they still use imperial measurements ie inches?

They dont make any sense. Metric has water freeze at 0, boil at 100. Measurements work on a system of 10's (10mm in a cm, 10 cm in a dm, 10 dm in a meter, 1000m in a km). Where did the whole idea of having 12 inches in a foot and 3 feet in a yard come from? It makes no sense.

I think the simple answer is because they can't be bothered.





They have grown up using inches and feet and miles etc and learning a whole new set of units is too much effort.





In the UK we have been undergoing a process of changeover since the 1830s or so. Metric units had to be used in schools from the 1950s but still old people use imperial. The majority of people know about metric but don't use it enough to get used to it. I have never met anyone who actually knows their weight in Kg.

The French were defeated and with that the metric system should be abolished. It's very basis and prime unit is the metre on which all else depends, and they even got that wrong didn't they.


I can use either system, but I note it's the people who can only use the metric system that want Imperial abolished. I note though most of the metric advocates also use calculators, and are always putting the decimal point in the wrong place.

Reply:most of us were taught in inches feet and yards. however many like myself had to learn the metric system in college or fail math chemistry and physics

On a similar vein, why don't the whole world standarize the power plug. Standardize the TV format (NTSC, PAL, SECAM, etc). Standardize Traffic, left-hand drive, right-hand drive? Standardize American/English spelling? .... Standardize ONE LANGUAGE.
Reply:Probably because people in the US don't realise how much it costs them along with the fact that the government is too busy keeping their oil flowing to change to a better measuring system.
