How much (in metric or imperial) is an American "cup" measure when used in recipes?

It differs according to the ingredient

1 cup of flour is 5oz or 140 g

1 cup of granulated sugar/or hard fat is 8oz or 225 g

1 cup of sultanas/raisins/uncooked rice is 7oz or 200 g

1 cup of grated cheese is 4oz or 110 g

and so on.

How much (in metric or imperial) is an American "cup" measure when used in recipes?
It depends what the ingredient is- if it is liquid then 240ml, if solid then it varies.
Reply:About 236ml.
Reply:In Canada, our measuring cups usually equate 250 ml with 1 cup, even thought he exact conversion is like Lewis said. My metric measuring cups are labelled 125 ml for the 1/2 cup and 250 ml for the cup.
